So how do you keep it running when it's cold to get it warmed up? It could be the throttle plate (butterfly) between the air filter and intake, has a film built up on it. The film will keep it from closing all the way and make for a hard cold start. Clean it off with carb cleaner.

I keep it running by keeping my foot on the brake as well as the gas. This vehicle was my wife's father until he recently passed away. I'm trying to get it running for my daughter to drive around town while she's in high school. I'll try this first. Thanks so much.

Ahh ok so it does stay running if you do that. I still would start with cleaning the butterfly. You will have to remove the large rubber tube between the air filter box and intake. Use a straitblade screwdriver or socket to losen the clamps and you might have to unplug a few wire connectors to remove it. Clean it, it may take a bit of elbow grease but it will come clean.
