Car wont start randomly

Asked by Codyg684 Nov 08, 2017 at 01:29 PM about the 2000 Cadillac Escalade 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

My escalade wont start sometimes and im not sure why. I would say it starts
8 times out of 10. About 3 of the successful starts it sounds a bit strange for
the first minute or so, almost like its gonna die so i give it some gas, but after
that its fine. Also when it wont start if i wait 30 minutes or so it will most likely
start right up.

So far all I have done is take it to autozone. The guy checked the battery said
it was ok but needed a charge. He said it might be the alternator but when he
used the battery monitor or whatever he said it seemed fine. Not sure if he
knew what he was doing though. No engine codes came up (my check
engine light is broken)

This is not the first time the car has had this problem. About a year ago we
spent quite a bit of money having it fixed. They would fix one thing and we
would think the problem was solved. Here is what they did in order.

First trip nov 2016
Scope and scan, obdii check, fuel system diagnosis, replace fuel pump
module, connector and lock ring, replace fuel filter, clear info and recheck
operation

Second trip dec 2016
Diagnostic scope and scan test, replaced the mass air flow sensor for
incorrect signal, one oxygen sensor (bank 1/sensor 2) for check engine light,
and the ignition coil for weak spark

Third trip feb 2017
Replaced the distributor cap, rotor button, and ignition coil wire

After the third trip it started fine until early oct 2017. I think the battery is 2 or
3 years old. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,
Cody

Starter is fine. I think it could be starter relay. When my wife turned the key all the I heard was a click. I took cover off of fuse box. I could feel the start relay clicking with the key turn. Volt meter read 12 volts so batt should be good. After trying to start several times the Escalade started up with the sound of a very powerful starter motor. Maybe I should replace the starter relay?

Replace the distributor cap, rotor button, and ignition coil wire again. It's moisture build up in those areas. Happens often especially during heavy rains.
