Fast acceleration then check engine light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I'm new here and this is what happened today on a drive.
I own a BMW 5 series e60 523i automatic. So the car has
had no problems so fa and this happened out of nowhere. I
was at a red light and when the green light came on I
accelerated very quickly reachig about 5000 rpm or so and
then suddenly my check engine light came on and car
started shaking and jerking. I stoped as soon as I could and
turned it off. Then I turned it on again and the light
dissappeared and the car stopped shaking and everything
was ok again... went to google stuff and every forum talks
about misfires. It has never happened before and the car
still drives normally now. Should I take it to a mechanic?
Yesterday I had service and got my car checked, my oil
changed and they said there were no problems with it. Is
this serious? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

If it is a misfire the engine light would be blinking if it happens again do not shut it off take it to an auto parts store and have them run codes

or take it back to the mechanic. Is it serious? It won't cause engine damage, but you won't get to where you are going anywhere fast.

I would caution you about taking a BMW to a "mechanic". You should go to a reputable shop that specializes in imports. Your local auto parts store will pull any trouble codes stored in the computer. But to get it fixed a gas station type of garage or chain type of repair facility will have absolutely no idea of what they're looking at! My Nephew learned that lesson the hard way with his '98 528i. Hope that helps! Jim
