If it doesn't have too many miles on it I would run synthetic. I run it in all my newer vehicles and have not been disappointed. True, your oil will run you about $35 (plus tax), but your peice of mind is priceless. Others will say that it doesn't matter, but nowadays its more important than ever to take care of your automobile (investment). It will probably take between 5 and 5.5 quarts of oil. Check after you're done with the oil change and make sure you're at proper levels.

full synthetic 5w30, since it's a 2003 it started with synthetic from the factory. I use mobil 1, it may cost more but it evens out because of the mile difference ie 3000 vs. 6000

I agree with synthetic, but make sure you have an oil stabilizer during the summer time... it'll run really thin and pending on how thin, it might knock on the first couple revs... during the winter... straight synthetic

Most these people say 5 to 5.5 quarts. I can assure you they do not own a Bimmer or never serviced one. Your Bimmer will require 7 full quarts of oil for a complete oil change. Don't even think that you can get away with just 5 quarts! Yes, I do agree with synthetic every 7,500 miles. 5w30

All oil has additives that decay and all oil degrades with the extreme temperatures near exhaust areas, but synthetic oil has less heat degradation.

I'm a female and don't know much about cars but my dad taught me at a young age how to change the oil. I changed the oil and filter on my 2001 BMW 325i using a 5.25 gallon jug. The oil is not registering on the stick. Is it the sensor? and is it ok to drive?

Did you see other answers saying it could take 7 to 7.5 quarts?

My 2000 528i and 2002 325i both require 5-30 synthetic oil and hold 7 quarts when changing oil. I do all my own oil changes. I always use a Mann oil filter. You can buy them on Amazon...very reasonable. Costco now has Kirkland synthetic oil...2 5qt jugs for less than $25.00, which is very inexpensive. My total cost for an oil change is about $25.00. I was running Mobil 1 until this came along a few months ago. Always change oil around 5000 miles if you want your engine to last 300k miles or more.
