Would failure to change motor oil cause the car to misfire or not operate correctly?

If you went long enough between changes and the oil was super dirty you would damage the engine.

No it should not cause your car to misfire or malfunction. a misfire could be caused by multitude if issues like bad spark plugs,one of your coil packs could be bad, spark plug wires, burnt up valve, worse case it could be a burnt up piston ring. and also do a compression check to see if one of your valves are bad. that is what I would start with first is a compression check that is what I recommend hope this helps
