How do I confirm if my oil rings are burned up?

Asked by Dobe_Love Dec 04, 2014 at 08:46 PM about the 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2008 Wrangler shows no signs of any engine problems, however it is losing oil
somewhere / somehow. It is NOT leaking it, and no smoke when I start it or drive it, so I
am assuming not burning it. I believe it is somehow going back into the intake. If this is
true, how much is it to replace the oil rings?

A dirty or clogged PCV valve can cause oil consumption. I've experienced it first hand... a pint low on oil after a long trip but car runs perfect with great gas mileage. I just pulled it and cleaned it with carb cleaner and no more oil consumption. They're also very cheap to buy

Do a compression test to see how the rings are holding up. "Replacing the oil rings" is tantamount to rebuilding the engine.
