How do I remove the exterior door handles on a 2006 4Runner?

I want to paint my door handles to match my T4R and need instructions on how to
remove them to avoid taping off and overspray.

Remove door facing inside trim, remove two screws at top of inside of door, disconnect handle by moving it to left and twisting.

On the 06? I've got the screws removed but there is a plastic brace it seems like holding it on.
