What could a thumping noise be when I start my car and put it in drive

Does the thump increase and decrease with the RPM's when the vehicle is standing still? If so, rule out the wheels. Does it sound like it is coming from the engine compartment? See if the idler pulley is vibrating. Look at all your belt driven items and see if they are vibrating. Could be a cam tensioner.
