My keys broke in my ignition will it have to be reprogrammed?

Asked by Guru2SLDQ Feb 27, 2020 at 04:04 PM about the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt ss and my key broke in
the ignition in 3 pieces, the tip is lodged in the
ignition still and i have the other 2 pieces. We had a
mechanic try and get it started but it was a fail and
he may have clipped a red wire (not sure what it
is). Will i have to get it reprogrammed if I pay for
the new ignition switch? I am wondering if it will be
worth the time and hassle to even pay for a new
ignition switch!!! Please help i am total clueless

Contact a couple locksmiths in your area. Some do key programming, some don't. The larger companies will help. Explain your situation to them, before they come out. They might be able to get the broken key out and cut and program a new key for you without replacing the ignition switch. Mind you, if the mechanic cut a wire, I would be prepared to splice it back together before or when the locksmith comes out to repair.
