2006 Kia Rio with squealing belts and delayed power

Asked by bronx Feb 27, 2020 at 04:34 AM about the 2006 Kia Rio Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After having my serpentine belt replaced, every time I start my car a belt
squeals. My steering pump isn’t working, my windows barely move up or
down, and my headlights are super dim, to name a few issues. We’ve
tightened the other belt to the point of breaking two of them. Lately, if I stop
somewhere, turn off the car but leave the door open, my car will not restart.
I’m writing this because it happened almost immediately from buying a new
battery, it personally feels all connected. I have problems getting the necessary
power to my car when first starting but then it’s like something is draining my
battery.

Sounds like the belt is slipping on the alternator. If its slipping, the alternator wont be able to generate enough power to charge the battery as you go which can definitely lead to your symptoms. If your power steering pump isn't working it may be seized. That could slip the belt enough for the alternator to not charge properly. I'd suggest taking the car in and looking for a seized pulley. Make sure your alternator spins freely in case the bearings are worn out as well. If you want to do it at home just remove the belt and you should be able to move all the pulleys by hand with the exception of the crankshaft pulley at the bottom of the engine. If any other pulley wont turn then that'll be your issue. Good luck
