The compressor should have an electric clutch so that it is disconnected at start up. The A/C compressor is used when the HVAC is at full window defrost. My Pontiac HVAC has two selections for windshield defrosting. Don't use the highest level until the compressor is healthy.

It the compressor clutch freezes up, it would likely cause the belt to break if you have a serpentine belt. It should not stop the car from starting.

I turned on my Ac and it was making a loud noise almost like the AC blower or motor was on it's last leg of blowing the air out and then it happened. Just stopped blowing. Is this the AC motor. The fan, or what might it be?

I can say it sure as hell will prevent a 96 lesabre from starting if siezed. No longer freewheels with clutch disengaged. Starter can't turn engine. Removed serpentine and checked pulleys, all good but ac and would start right up without belt, bit can't go far like that.
