There should be a block or head mounted coolant temperature sensor. Overheating engines may also experience knock in which case the knock sensor will shut motor off. Whether it's fried or not you'll have to have it inspected by a mechanic.
I own a 96 caprice LT1. Best advice is buy THE authority on the facts, that is the Factory service manual ,it comes in 2 books total is about 800 pages, the best part is there are NO opinions on any of the pages. It also gives you step by step trouble shooting to discover which part for YOU or a mechanic to replace
