Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I have a 2006 outback wagon. First question is it a legacy . My first Subaru the 6 th letter in the vin # is 6 2.5I non turbo. Second question is it an AVLS engine? If not what is the correct model #,and what can I use to replace it . What would need to be changed / modified? A professional Mechanic will be doing the swap with lots of Subaru dealership working experience. He wants me to find the engine and I am clueless as it is my first Subaru .

AVLS is more often referred to at VVT, or just "variable valves". It was introduced in the 2.5i in 2006, and used through 2012. To assure a simplest fit chase a 2006-7, although a 2008-9 is easy also, but exhaust may be different. Ask your wrench if it's a PZEV emissions, too, as small mods may need to be swapped over, as the ECM has to match up. FWIW is this just about head gaskets or did you blow the block too?

Rod came thru the block right front. BTW it is not PZEV . Thanks for clearing that up for me that is what I believe caused this problem. She stuttered twice as I was pulling out to pass almost like an ignition miss then POW . I theorize that the VVT somehow malfunctioned valve meets piston and its all over.
