Jeep commander only drive in 4 low

Asked by KatieJumonville Dec 19, 2016 at 01:33 PM about the 2006 Jeep Commander Base 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2006 Jeep Commander ran fine this morning,
this afternoon, started fine slipped into gear fine
then all of a sudden engine rpms shot up and
acted as if in neutral. The front drive shaft spins
like crazy when i put it in gear but will not engage.
In 4 low, however, both drive shafts spin and
vehicle will drive when put into gear. Transfer case
or maybe solenoid?

I had the exact same issue and when I had the transfer case replaced, it did not fix the issue. Any other suggestions on a fix for this issue?

Maybe the CV joints in the front look underneath see if they look like they're seated in the whole way grab them and move them see if they're clanging or loose

Was it the whole shaft that was the problem or just the joints. My jeep is doing the same thing. It will only drive in 4 low and when it is in AWD it won't shift into park or reverse. I'm really hoping the CV shaft will fix it.

Mine did the same thing! I let off the gas and it bobbled on a small patch of ice. Lost power to the wheels, but would run in 4 Lo so knew it wasn’t a tranny issue or transfer case. They got in the garage and the CV joint had come loose! I just had some front end work done and wonder if that was enough to make loose. Working fine now!
