4X4 engine swap to 2wd

I have a 99 tahoe with a 4x4 vortec i want to
know if i can replace the engine with
another vortec that came out of a 2wd or
does it have to be a engine from a 4x4

I want to swap out my motor in a 88 chevy Silverado 2wd with motor out of 88 chevy 4x4 can I use motor and tranny from the four wheel drive truck in my 2wd?
