What could be causing my pickup to be Over Heating?

Asked by Guru23358 Mar 07, 2020 at 07:57 PM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Two issues.
Truck is overheating. It takes quite a while to heat up, the heater blows cool are
even when hot? Changed the thermostat and ran with radiator cap off for quite
a while to purge. Ran low on temp guage for a long time then overheated.
Heating system will not change zones, only discharges out the vents.

check when hot to see if a rad. hose is sucking closed...still sounds like air in the system...

Change your radiator return jug. I had the same issue. $50 on Amazon. I also removed the fail safe on the thermostat, but believe that was irrelevant. When I installed the t-stat I made sure the hole was at 12 oclock to allow air to escape.

The not changing zones is unrelated. When you remove the dash there are some slots right behind where the knobs are. Those slots are likely stripped, at least that was my issue.
