Question about a motor build 5.8l 351w naturally aspirated vs a built 4.9l 300 twin turboed
Hey I’m new to the forum but I
happen to have a 1994 f150 with a
4.9l 300 in it. At the moment I have
4:56 gears in it and it handles the 35s
fine. I’m eventually planning on doing
37s-38s and I know it will be just
slightly bogged down some more.. I
have been wanting to do a motor
build since I got the truck and have
been looking into two options. I don’t
know if I Either want to stay with a
4.9l that has been built to handle the
ability to have 2 turbos and build one
and throw it in and not have to worry
about swapping computers. I’d be
getting a 4.9l from the junkyard that
way I could still drive it while I do the
build.. well this is the other option I
have considered. Why not just have a
naturally aspirated 5.8l 351w built
and have it pushing around 450-
500hp and same goes for the torque.
The reason why I’d like to stay with
the 4.9l is because it is quite a low
end torque machine. Now I know a
4.9l 300 is hard to find turbos for. But
I’m wondering if there is any way
possible to get anywhere from 300-
350hp out of a 4.9l and around 400 lb
ft of torque. I was told once that it is a
tad bit cheaper to go with the 300
build because it’s gets a bit more
pricey building the v8s. I know the
4.9l 300s will run forever if you take
care of them right. I’m just wondering
what would be more reliable too. The
5.8 351w or the twin turbo 4.9l 300
