Heater Hose Leaking (replacement guide?)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

I have a heater hose leaking and so I have to keep replenishing my coolant in my 2001 Sienna.  Does anyone know how to replace this part?  I'm not an experienced car-mechanic by any stretch but I have done a few things here and there, so detailed advice is appreciated.

I would advise that you take this to a good mechanic, because if it is just one hose that needs to be replaced, it shouldn't cost much- although the labor might run the bill up because you will want to replace all the coolant and pressure test the cooling system before you take it on the road again- this is a messy job, and can be dangerous for your engine if not done correctly- just spend the extra money, keep your hands clean, and get it done right- that is a valuable van-

To get access to the two heater hose connections at the firewall you will have to remove the windshield wiper cowling. To remove that you need to take off the wipers, then the cowling cover, then the wiper motor and wiper connecting arms inside the cowling and finally the cowling trough. This removal should take 20 to 30 minutes. The only hard part will be to get the wipers off you need to remove the nut then bend the wiper arm and rock it back and forth. The other hard part could be the heater hose and the clamps . put a pliers on the hose to tube connection and twist it to break it loose. For the clamps you have a good channel lock pliers or suitable vise grip. when putting the new hoses on I use vaseline on the tube ends or hose ID.
