1995 Corolla speedometer stops working.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I asked in another post about a related
problem but I thought I'd try again and get
more specific. Lately my speedometer keeps
dropping to zero, and sticking there. Mostly
when I'm driving slowly in city traffic. The
transmission feels weird when this happens,
but it's hard to explain how. It still runs.
Maybe just feels like it's one gear too low.
After driving a while, the speedometer will
just start working again. It's weird. (I know
it's an old car. My usual mechanic says his
diagnostic machine for a car this old is in
storage because he hadn't used it for so
long!! )

I just had it serviced a few weeks ago. I told the guy to look it over and let me know if he saw any problems. I assume he would have checked those things. He changed the oil and checked fluids etc...

How long have you had the vehicle and how many miles where on the vehicle when you bought it and how many miles on it now ?
About 114k miles. I just got it a few weeks ago. Free from a friend. The mechanic said its in very good shape overall.

Take it back to mechanic and ask them to check the transmission fluid again and ask friend if they ever had this changed if not with that many miles if it had not been done I would get it done. If fluid is a dark the fluid is burnt it should be a red color.
It sounds like the speedometer is on limp mode. You can drive it but it will worsen and damage your transmission and burn through a tank of gas 4 times faster. That year speedometer is no longer sold new by Toyota but I'd recommend finding a used one from a junk yard.
