91 corolla tries to crank but wont start

running fine backed out of drive way it died. when I tried to crank it, it turns over like its out of gas , but it won't crank. it has gas, fuel pump is working I smell gas when trying to crank

I had something similar on another brand of car. The engine would crank, but sometimes not catch and start the first time. This was solved by replacing the crankshaft position sensor. Have you checked the engine computer for any trouble codes?
