I am unable to start a1990 Toyota Corolla using only a high amp 110V battery charger. When a dead battery is used in conjunction with the charger the engine only then turns over rapidly, but will not start. The car ran great a few months ago before the battery issue. Did I damage the electirical system by First, using Only the Charger without being connected to the battery? I'm perplexed, any ideas?

When I'm on the freeway, I do notice my car is slow on accelerating, but my MPG is fine. How much would it cost to get this fix? Also, would I fail the California SMOG check?
