My shifter moves freely, but the car remains in park no matter what. What is the problem?

The van was fine yesterday. It starts and idles fine, but cannot be shifted out of park. The shifter moves in and out of gears, but the vehicle stays in park and the indicator stays in park.

so? the selector on the transmission is working..but im reading ,,,up top the secector stays in park.and the car wont move? or does it if it does then the shifter is broken...?

The selector stays in park but the shifter moves like normal. I can't get the van out of park. How do I determine what might be wrong?
depends ... if the shifter moves.and nothing else the shifter or cable is broken..check both ends of the cable...please
if the shifter is not broken or the input selectorat trans. is not broken its the cable.... and about $50.00
My gear shift is stuck in park and the shift moves freely up and down. What is the problem and about how much would it cost to fix?

I drove a block heard noise and car stopped but didnot cut off. Just conrinued to run but could change gears but vehicle would not drive. Its an automatic and its a chevy uplander
