2002 2.5 Suburu 2.5   overheats w thermostat installed but not with it removed

Bought car cheap with reported overheat issue. Tstat obs codes. Did block test blue fluid did NOT turn yellow. Installed new tsat and found none in previous. Didn’t overheat w it out. Overheated w it in.

Bought car cheap w reported overheating issue. Did a block test blue fluid did not turn yellow no bubbling. Obs codes for thermostat. Installed new tstat observed previous tstat had been removed. Installed and bled overheats. Did not overheat when it was out. Anyone with an idea???
