Humming with throttle?

Asked by Lynn May 15, 2017 at 03:58 PM about the 2000 Subaru Outback Base Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car started humming while under throttle. It is continuous with the cruise
on. At low speeds the shifter buzzes until you hit 35mph. It doesn't hum while
parked with ignition on and tranny in park, neutral, or drive. I have no check
engine light or any warning lights. I have checked the fluid level and it is fine.
I'm at a loss on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe worn gears in the transmission. Have you checked the gear oil level or changed it?

I was hoping it wasn't the tranny. Wishful thinking on my part. Thanks for the help. I got the car from my brother and he put a used tranny in it. That's why it was my first thought.

Maybe he didn't set the differential tolerances correctly...or could be a bad pinion mating. Check the setup before trashing the trans, as these noises are usually the diff.

I had a similar issue in my car. But it wasn't a humming. It was a vibration at low speeds. It wasn't super bad and it went away so I put it off. But it came back with vengeance. It got super bad. Through first and second gear is vibrated so much it shook my feet. So I had to cave even though I couldn't afford the repair. Got a really nice mega of to help me out. They put my car into the air and my cv joint was completely shot. Not even sure how I was driving. It looked like someone had torn it open. Thankfully I bought a warranty on this lemon and am getting my monies worth out of it. Symptoms I had. Vibrating shifter knob when accelerating through first and second gear. Sounded like a very loud clunking/knocking/vibration from under my feet (as the front drivers side was the torn one) Replaced both front cv axles and the boots. Problem Solved
