I have a 2001 Grand Prix SE with a 3100 engine. When I am at cruising speed and I kick the pedal to the floor I have very poor acceleration but the engine rpms kick up.

It sounds like your transmission is slipping. Check your ATF fluid level with the car running on level ground.

You are low on trans fluid. It's important to use Dextron VI. Make sure you're on level ground, put vehicle in park, emergency brake on, start vehicle and warm up. Try not to overfill. If you have any doubt, have someone who knows how to do it.
