01 Pontiac Grand Am Se RPM and Hard idle

Asked by Amber Aug 18, 2018 at 01:14 AM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Changed the spark plugs and boot in my Pontiac because it was misfiring
(all the spark plugs where bad) and after I changed them the car started to
idle really hard and then the rpms won't stop going up and down. This
causes the entire car to shake and sometimes die. I tried resetting the
computer by the whole "have you turned it on and off?" method
(disconnected the battery). I'm at a loss.

Are you 100 percent sure you put everything back in the right spot? What you're explaining sounds like the cylinders are firing out of time. Did you replace the plugs with the same ones physically? Original equipment stock plugs that are listed in the owners manual are ALWAYS the best choice unless the engine is highly modified

I'm not very mechanically inclined. The ones in the car where so old they where burnt to a crisp. I went to Autozone (I know, I know) and they are the ones that gave the spark plugs to me. I may recheck it all however.

There's nothing wrong with that not everyone is but with patience and a little common sense almost any can do it succesfully. A friendly word of advice for just such a occasion is to do one spark plug and wire (or Coil On Plug) at a time to prevent mixing anything up, with a little research online youll be able to find what goes where and check over your work. Let me know how you make out
