I own a 99 grand am, and I'm broke as..... my car has been acting up for a few weeks now it was struggling to start. Occasionally it would feel like it was struggling to change gears when accelerating

Then it just started to die at idle. The next
time I started it loud noises came out, the
sounded terrible and was no longer
drivable. I'm about to change the spark
plugs, anyone have any clue what could be
wrong?

Sounds like it may be starving for fuel. The fuel filter may be plugged or the fuel pump has quit working. Unhook the fuel line turn key to on & see if there is a steady stream of gas.

Also, when was the last time any ignition parts were changed (dist cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc)? The car is 15 years old and may just need some "tune up" parts.
