Transmission or Steering Column?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hi. I have recently run into a problem with my
grand marquis. I have an automatic transmission
and when I go to switch the stick on the steering
column will only goto neutral, drive, and some of
the lower gears. The park or reverse dose not
work. When I'm driving in my car and it's in drive
it's shifts fine by itself. Can anyone please help me
diagnose my car? Please and thank you!

This could be the result of an external linkage bind or an internal linkage problem in the transmission. Externally, you will see an arm near the steering column where it exits the fire wall. A rod will be connected to the arm which connects to a linkage arm on the transmission. I would start here and investigate the external linkage first. Verify that there is no binding, bent linkage, or anything hindering the movement of linkage. Beyond that, if you don't see anything causing the issue, the binding could be a result of a linkage failure inside the transmission. This will require to get into the transmission and at least drop the pan to get access.
Thank you, I'm going to look into it as soon as I get off work.

It sure sounds like a bad bushing in the external linkage, either up at the column, or down at the transmission. If not, then it's inside.
