It lets you know something is not right, and needs attention for repair, thus the vehicle gets scanned for trouble codes to determine what the problem actually is.

Go to an auto parts store where they would have a scanner. Have the vehicle scanned for the trouble code or codes. You can look the codes up on line to see what the trouble is. But you have to be able to know what can cause a trouble code. Best have a mechanic decipher what the problem is.
