I didn't mention that if the vehicle is a all wheel drive, removing the front drive shaft then would not work.

This Jeep Grand Cherokee, the WK, is full time 4WD. That means there is an open differential in the transfer case. When either drive shaft is removed, there is nothing for the center differential to torque against, and won't produce force to drive the wheels that have a driveshaft still attached. Same principle as a spinning wheel on one side of an axle without lockers engaged. The wheel with traction is still useless, because there is no resistance for the differential to torque against.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with a 4.7 4wd all wheel drive. I had the same crazy noise coming from the front end while driving from stop to about 45-55mph. When I would go faster I wouldn't here the noise as much or as harse! I finally figured out what it was without 3 different mechanics help!!! 1- told me it was the front hub!!! And that I had to change it right away because the wheel could fall off!! So I did. Didn't fix the problem! 2- told me it was making that noise because the bushings were bad in the control arms!!! 3- told me it was the CV axles! So after pricing all this at O'Reilly auto parts, I crawled my big butt under this thing and started my own investigation, and what I found was the front drive shaft moved way to much for my liking. So I removed it to check it out.(12) bolts total. Didn't know what I was looking for to know if it was bad or not, so I figured I would just take it to the parts store and figure out if it was bad. So not thinking I jumped into the jeep and started to drive to the parts store!! While driving I thought how's this possible with no front drive shaft.!!!! Anyway it drives great without the FRONT drive shaft! Was going to replace it right away but not for $629.00. lol 4wd is over rated right now!!!!!! Hope this helps and good luck.
