Starter

Asked by Bruce Oct 27, 2017 at 07:46 PM about the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just installed a used 5.3 in my 02 GMC
Sierra 4 wheel drive and I'm not getting
anything to the starter. Turn the key over
no click no nothing. I've had starter
checked, checked all fuses , traced
everything down to starter checked all
grounds. Everything seems to be legit but I
feel like I'm missing one ground on the
back of the block. I got the one from cab
and another one coming off the harness.
Exactly how many grounds go to the back
of the block and how many goes on the
front of the block down below the power
steering pump ??

There should be at least one large main ground from the engine block/where the transmission bolts to the block,if there's not I'd make and install my own using 4awg wire. Most vehicles also have one from the cyllinder head/valve cover to the body. You didn't mention if you checked/replaced the starter relay, if not it's cheap and easy to replace and is a component that wears naturally through regular use

Ok I got the one from the cab then another fairly large ground but I'm not seeing any other ground on the harness toward the back of the motor. Not even a wire that could've been pulled apart. How do I make one ? All the lights come on in the cab besides my radio and when I turn key to start all my 4 wheel drive lights come on and stay on even after cycling the key a few times. I just replaced the relay.
