Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Why is my truck losing oil?
If I drive for 30 minutes or take off at high
RPM I'll lose oil. I add oil about every two
weeks. After long trips my engine will smell
like burning oil. It's a 6.0 vortec, 91,000
miles.

Thank you! I don't know if it matters I forgot to put in the description that there is a white residue on the dipstick when pulling it out. It's a good amount too

what happens is this valve which passes crankcase fumes into the intake through a one-way rattling valve...plugs with oil smoke...then the pressurized oil smoke finds a way out thru the valve cover gaskets and onto the hot exhaust manifold...makin' in effect a "smoke factory"~

hmmm...do a compression test and compare the results...noting the condition of each sparkplug...we will know if to pursue a valve cover gasket will be in order or not then too~

has your coolant level been dropping...or you think the snuff-pufferson combustion is pumpin' unto itself creating a "froth" of jello pudding...or white like porridge~

in any event...this ain't good....will see if perhaps you should buy two if this is chokin' to beat the band and causing problems because of it....you may want to snuggle the valve covers an 1/8 of a turn~

I will do all these tomorrow, would it be expensive to take to a auto shop or is this something I should do in my own garage?

Look for oil seepage around all of the gasket areas of your engline block. The fix could be as simple as re-torqing some bolts.
