Problems with my thunderbird.

Asked by Thunderchickenman Jan 03, 2017 at 03:28 AM about the 1995 Ford Thunderbird LX RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I bought this thunderbird about 2 months ago.
Well here's what's wrong with it. Everytime I hit the
gas the engine cuts off for a second then it will
start moving. Sometimes the car dies when sitting
in idle. It as does when I put it in reverse. I thought
it was idling to low but turns out it's not. Another
thing my girlfriend was driving it today and she
was going about 45 mph and it died on her. I
thought it was an alternator.  But I did a little test
by turning on the car and unhooking the battery
which if it is a bad alternator then the alternator
would cut off. But it didn't so it's not that. I'm
thinking it's a transmission problem. But I don't
know. I recently changed the oil. It ran a little better
and changed the spark plugs and wires. Ohh that
did a big difference. The engine actually high rev
and it's so beautiful! This is my first v8. Well I
wouldn't say my first cause I've been around a
bunch. But the first I've own myself. And I love it.
So can someone help me? I like to know what's
going on with my car so I can fix it. It has a 4.6 liter
v8 in it.

Try cleaning the throttle body with a spray carb cleaner, run some fuel injection cleaner threw the gas. Sounds like dirty injectors, dirty throttle body, also change the fuel filter. For best results with the fuel injection cleaner run some premium fuel threw.

well, if you keep buying old cars, you will quickly learn to hate them as they drain your bank account- those old T-Birds from the nineties are just a bag full of problems- if you really "love" it, find a good mechanic who can help you sort it out- and keep it running on a budget- if possible-

I didn't pay tensioner what year hear Thunderbird is but mine's a 97 and I look up fall the recalls and one of them was the intake manifold. It's made out of plastic believe it or not if you look at it I couldn't believe it I just bought my 97 LX just Last Summer and I looked up all the recalls and that was one of them I don't know if you have a certain amount of time to have the recall taken care of but I'm going to look that up right now. Because I love my 97 10th Generation the last production year for this model.
