Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 lincoln town car... fuel gauge worked fine... electronic... took to shop
had some work done including fuel pump.. now fuel gauge not working..
start car and comes up at last spot before work done. shows 179 to empty
and just over half a tank on gauge.. after about 30 to 40 seconds gauge
goes to empty and diaplay reads..CS... check engine light now on.. I can
change message center to different read outs such as avg speed or trip
mileage and they work fine... mechanic now says he thinks it is in cluster..
has pulled tank again and checked sending unit and float... any ideas
before I sink what i fear will be unnecessary cluster replacement??

It happens, I had to replace a bad instrument cluster on an older car, you're about at this point in time, anything after 15 years, things start going sideways. My rule of thumb now is don't keep any vehicle past 15 years.

An independent mechanic figured out the cluster on my old 95 Honda Accord was beyond repair and found me a reconditioned unit, worked fine after he replaced it. If it is the entire cluster, you might find it much more economical to go with reconditioned part. Is this the "original cluster" in your car?
