Ran out of gas mow won't start

Some times, when you run out of gas, the residues at the bottom of tank get stirred and clog the fuel pump and fuel filter preventing the fuel from reaching the engine. This happened to a friend recently and after the fuel filter was replaced, the car started (with a little coughing) and then went back to normal.
