Question type: Maintenance & Repair

front end shakes violently. when braking. only becomes violent above 50mph and lessens as speed decreases.

possibilities....? warped rotors. out of the question. rotors and pads are brand new (first thing i checked)

steering stabilizer or dampener....? ive heard part by both names.

A faulty stabilizer could be causing a shake like that, especially if you run bigger tires or a lift. Also check your alignment and make sure other steering components are tight and there is no steering play.

steering is aligned and with very little play in the wheel.

check control arms and front axles. worst case scenario the brake calipers may be flexing

it was the steering stabilizer. i replaced it some time ago, and the shaking went away. the old one was quite the bent up piece of junk. lost all of its hydraulic pressure

I have had the same problem with may 95 Grand Cherokee. First replaced front breaks and calipers, turned rotors. Problem went away, but came back after a few months. Was told the shaking was coming from the rear, and had that work done. problem went away, and came back again after a few months. Now thaw say the front brakes, caliper and rotors need replacing after only 18,000 miles on them. I am not letting them do it again even though pads are under warranty, until I find the reals cause of the shaking and break failure. Could the things you've mentioned cause the brake failure as well?

a faulty steering stabilizer can cause rotors to warp. the front end shaking may also be a result of old worn out tie rods as well.

my '06 liberty is ok starting out or local driving. Only when on highways it get shaking problems. Had same problem with a honda crv- and tried all the same suggestions to no avail. it ended up being collapsed flexible brake lines to the calipers. the would not release the pressure to the rotors and became very hot. Again when cool they work fine but on long distance or high speeds they build up heat and may distort enough to act like warped rotors. anybody agree ?? I cost me a lot of money the first time, Hope to fix mine cheaper this time around. Don
