Subaru Legacy 2015 oil consumption

Asked by lynncindy Nov 17, 2018 at 01:48 PM about the Subaru Legacy

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Oil light started coming on at 72K miles. Took it to dealer who did oil consumption test. Dealer said result not abnormal. Oil light came on again at 90K miles. Dealer added oil. Light came on again at 92K miles. Mechanic talked about replacing small block but then was not available. Service manager had oil added and suggested we come back at 93K for oil change. What is best way to make Subaru replace the short block?

How much oil does it use in 1,200 miles? 1,200 miles is the specified duration of the oil consumption test. Subaru says your engine should not use more than 1/3 quart in 1,200 miles (1 quart in 3,600).

We had the same issue- try to get the consumption test from the service Dept (try asking receptionist or check-out person). We did this and found that those “passed” tests were FAILS. (I resisted the urge to get mad at them) I calmly told them since it failed, that they could set an appointment to replace the small block or I could check with Subaru of America to see what they would suggest.

Just curious, have you all purchased an extended warranty to cover the short block repair or is this covered by Subaru? I just purchased a 2015 legacy and want to be cautious of any oil consumption issues and how to handle the hurdles.
