how do you tell if your headlight is just a bulb burned out or a bad unit 2006 super beetle

I bought a new headlight a year ago but just now noticed that is not working but lamp looks okay. However, I do not want to buy another and light still will not work.

Check light socket for voltage when lights are turned on. But truthfully with all the trouble you have to go thru just to get to some head lights I would have a new one there and ready to put in. (Not sure how hard it is to get to yours). Most of the time it is just a bad bulb anyway.
