Truck stalls when put into gear

Asked by Graham Jun 08, 2017 at 01:11 AM about the Dodge D-Series

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Everytime I put my truck into gear the
whole truck jerks and kills the engine. I
lifted the rear end off the ground and put it
into gear and it didnt stall. I can't figure it
out could it be a tranny problem? Or
possibly a rear end problem im just not
sure. Any help is appreciated.   1989

Maybe the torque converter is bad if its a lock up torque converter it does that same thing had that happen to me once and once is enough

when a lock up torque converter goes bad instead of locking up at say 23000 rpm it stays locked and acts like an engine brake, they came out with these years ago in an answer to direct engine transmission fuel economy and when the engine slows the converter unlocks and drives normal until needed but when they go bad they lock and your engine transmission is directly linked without any rpm buffer so it stops the engine.
