2001 Chevy Tracker won't shift into any gear

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While in a drive-thru, I heard a high-pitched whirring sound (reminded me of something coiled coming undone) and I cannot put it into any gear. It's a 5-speed manual. When I tried to put it into reverse, it made a terrible grinding sound and would not go.  Any suggestions on where to start?

One more thought come to mind after thinking on this question, check the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder before you drop the tranny.
