Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I started my 72 Beetle and drove about .2 mi and It could smelled like something was burning or heating up.  I turned around and went back home, opened the deck lid to find the generator smoking.  What would caused that?
It appeared that no damage was done, because the car will start with no problem.

shorted wire, battery cables hooked up backwards, generator brushes, regulator is shot, lots of things can cause this. how much voltage is the generator putting out?
