Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Looking at this Subaru sometime this week. I know up until 2010 the outback's
reliability was pretty spotty. What are things I need to look out for on this?
Below is from the craigslist post:
Gold Outback. 2006. Engine replaced in 2016. Current mileage on engine is
140 K. Timing belt done. All regular upkeep done.

"Spotty" is the wrong word. FRagile HGs and goofy rear exhaust are the issues. Yet ANY 14yr old is suspect for huge reinvestment. Given the motor was replaced (or maybe just the HGs and head work?), I'd check the 4EAT' functions and lag time, as well ATF condition, VERY carefully, as the tranny is next. Its inner seals shrink and crack, as well all functions being succeptible to sludge buildup from neglected ATF changes, as they weren't part of suggested "normal" maintenance. If you're in the rust belt check carefully for excessive underbody rot. Note that fuel eco is NOT the forte of the 2000- 2009 2.5i/4EAT combo. The fragile CVT upgrade in 2000-2012 boosted eco hugely. The new and far better 2.5i in 2013+ is superb. I threw away a decent 2006 Limited OB to my friend's shop for $700 last month. They'll spend $1k+ to serviuce and resell for $3k. So that's the market. BE CAREFUL! Ern
