These Subies use a hydraulic clutch to apply the clutch, but once the pedal is up a hydraulic leak has no consequence, so I'm guessing you've blown the pressure plate springs and/or clutch disc. Note that the clutch geometry is purely hydraulic with NO adjustment feature to create slack, so when the pedal's grabbing up top continuously it's because of weak springs or no disc thickness left. Regardless, figure 3-4 hours and a $200 parts kit. Don't ignore the TOB. OTOH the clutch's master cylinder is cheap, but also easily rebuilt with cleaning and new seals. But the Subie 2.5i has lots of bottom end torque, so unless driven gingerly (no fast starts) its whole life it'll eat clutches. If you also need tires, wheel bearings, brakes or exhaust it may be time to give up this senior specimen. Maybe say goodbye? Tough call from here in Boston, as all 200-2004 and most 2005-2009 have bitten the dust.
