Overheating Jeep
Asked by Megan Mar 18, 2018 at 09:45 PM about the 2006 Jeep Commander
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My ‘06 jeep commander was leaking so we replaced the
radiator which solved the leak. But then it began
overheating so we replaced the thermostat (the old one
wouldn’t open). It was still overheating so we replaced the
water pump. IT’S STILL OVERHEATING! Help! There are
no signs of a problem with the head gasket.

I had a 09 Rubicon with the same problem and I replaced the piston rings and I replaced my air intake and got a more open grille and it stopped overheating. Get it diagnosed and if they can't find anything, new intake is about $180 for a good K&N and piston rings I had to pay $375 get it diagnosed before you pay a single dime that's my advise

are the fans coming in when it gets hot ? is the coolant topped off ?
Yes the fan is coming on and we have enough coolant in it. We checked the hoses from the radiator to the engine and they are working well

you said after the radiator was replaced it started over heating so I would look into that , something blocking the flow ? unless the head gasket is blown , what does the exhaust look like ?
Check your Coolant reservoir, mines was clogged and the coolant wasn't getting to the radiator.
Head gasket is probably crack some were and the compression is getting in the cooling system, check the upper hose is hard after a few minutes with the car on, its that. it happens to me and I use crack sealer it works.

I was having this exact issue with my Commander, I bought a new thermostat to see what happened and it continued to over-heat, I believed it to be the water pump or a clogged line next, for the fun of it I tested the new thermostat, it failed to open! this happened 2 more times with 3 NEW thermostats?! the 4th one tested actually worked! the issue was no more, very odd that 3 NEW thermostats from 2 different stores failed. Test the thermostats before throwing money away, I nearly bought a new water pump.
