why wont my truck stay running

Asked by nofukum Sep 03, 2016 at 09:29 AM about the 1996 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500. it was having problems shifting, so I replaced
the governor control solenoid. that seems to have solved the shifting issue,
but now it wont stay running. when i start it up cold, it will idle high and run fine,
but after less then 5 minutes, if I don't keep feathering the gas, it will just die,
every time. very confused.

Several things, weak fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad idle air contoller, bad throttle position sensor. Have it scanned at a reputable shop, NOT an auto parts house. Don't spend money guessing.

Sometimes you can clean an idle air controller. If you buy replacement parts, make sure you buy OE genuine parts from the dealer, not aftermarket junk at the parts house. STP makes an cleaner in an aerosol can with a straw sprayer. Look on line for location of these parts for your truck

Did you pull loose a vacum hose somewhere or break one? Check em' all

well, cleaned my idle air control valve. it idles like a dream now, thanks for the info. unfortunately, the transmission is now slipping out of gear or not going into gear at all. Anyone want to buy a mechanic's project? :)
