1998 dodge ram van transmission slips in and out of overdrive at 50 mph

Your best to take it to a transmission shop for proper diagnosis.
Could be the overdrive piston seal, and or the steels and frictions are slipping due to a bad or broken overdrive spring. A rather large spring at that. Take it to a tranny shop.
It depends on what you mean by slips in and out of OD. If the truck is simply downshifting into a lower gear because you are going up a slope then this could be entirely normal.
