It is my ynderstanding that the lariat label on the f-series trucks simply means luxury edition. It is only cosmetic differences such as leather seats, and a better stereo. It doesn't change the engine at all.
I'm not sure as to the specifics of the 1987 model. However, the Lariat trim is always top-of-the-line and typically carries slightly bigger wheels (about 18") and nicer rims.

I have an 87 XLT Lariat , and basically it is a top line edition . The interior will have high back bucket seats , with arm rests . Intermittent wipers , cruise control , p/s , p/b , a/c , premium sound system ,power door locks, power windows , etc ...... The exterior will have a dressed up trim , as well as mag wheels , or styled steel rims with trim rings .
