Can you flat tow a 4x2 2007 Ford Expedition? If so, is there any modifications necessary?

Question type: General

I would like to flat tow my 4x2 2007 Ford Expedition with a 5.4 liter engine behind my class A Motorhome.  Is this possible without dropping the drive shaft?

It is not recomended to flat tow your expedition with the engine off and driveshaft in. The oiling system in your transmission runs off of the engine. You can tow short distances but the transmission components will be turning without fresh fluid being moved through them. This will cause exessive wear due to the fluid overheating and losing its ability to lubricate properly. You can flat tow unlimited distances with the engine ideling or the driveshaft removed. if you chose to tow with the engine running you should stop often to make sure you are not overheating the engine. You may not get enough air flow to the radiator while the expedition is behind your motor home.

I am towing a 2003 2 WD Expedition behind a RV. I installed a Remco 2 piece driveshaft which can be disconnected (the driveshaft is 2 piece. Close to the differential it is splined where the two pieces meet. A splined ring moves back and forth to engage or disengage the two pieces of the drive shaft) from the drivers seat area. I have installed two of these - one on a Lincoln Town Car and the latest on this Expedition. Works fine.

no even if you remove or disconnect the drive shaft the front clutch hubs are vacuum disengaged so if the motor is not running the front didderentl is turning the transfer case which is turning the transmission.
