How to make the new key work with my grand prix

Asked by Tiffany Nov 23, 2019 at 10:58 AM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 01 grand prix and the only key was
lost. I went ahead and changed out the
cylinder lock that came with a new key.

How do i get this new key to be programmed
to my car?
Do i have to take it the key to be computer
programmed first or is their something that
can be done now to make the key work with
my car?

I have been stranded for 24hrs now so please
please this is an urgent matter if anyone xan
let me know what to do now.

Thank You

You should have just called an auto locksmith and had them make and program a new key for you. Since you changed the ignition lock, you will still need to have the new key and ignition lock programmed to the car. An auto locksmith or dealership can help in this matter.

You must have one working key to be able to program additional keys, up to ten, to the vehicle yourself. With no working keys you need to be towed to your local GM Dealer or have a reputable locksmith come to you to do the program. Don't waste your time on the 10 or 30 minute relearn procedure that everyone talks about! It doesn't work in this situation! The Dealer or a locksmith is your only option! Hope that helps! Jim

Good advise from Jim. Also the car has to be programmed to recognize the key, not the other way around. Keys are usually not programable.

Thank you Bob. No, it's not a resistor key. It's a transponder key. Resistor keys were used in earlier models of the Grand Prix. Jim
