2003 Galant having problems starting

Asked by Shan Dec 17, 2014 at 02:14 PM about the 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello my name is Shantyle.
My Galant has been having problems
starting at first we thought it was the starter
or battery.  The battery seems to be fine.
My dad no longer thinks its the starter he
ran cables to it and it crank with no
problems but there is a wire that hooks up
to the starter (I think) thats not getting any
"Fire" as he says.

If I mess with the car for a while and keep
ring to crank it eventually it will crank ( last
night it took me about a hour)  but today I
couldn't get it to crank at all except for
when he put the cables directly to the
starter but I obviously can't do that every
time I have to start the car. Help please!

The hour you tried starting the car, was it just click, click, click, click, and so on until it started? If your dad can get a multimeter and clip the positive probe on the positive post of the starter solenoid and the negative probe on the body of the starter as a ground. As you turn the ignition key the multimeter should read 12 volts or higher each time. If it does, it's the starter solenoid. If it doesn't read 12 volts, then he has to go back to the starter relay or neutral safety switch and even back to the actual ignition switch.
